Instead of relying on guard points, as you are in axe mode more often than not, you utilize evasion to stay out of range of the monster's attacks before letting rip with a few phial bursts. You aren't necessarily aiming for the head as much, and will take any advantage to whip into axe mode and hack away at any available part of the monster. Basically, you are trying to maximize DPS through sheer force rather than trying to KO the monster. The second style of play is actually what I started with when I picked up the charge blade, as I have been a long time GS user who is used to the draw-attack > dodge > sheath > repeat style of play. When the monster is always focused on you, you can take advantage of guard points a lot more effectively, whereas when you hunt in a party, you may be whiffing guard points more often. One possible downside is that this style seems to be more effective when hunting solo. Not only that, you are basically impervious to attacks as long as your timing and positioning are good. The good part about this style is that if you can use it right and use it well, you are in attacking range of the monster a lot more than most other weapons, allowing for many opportunistic strikes. This style is all about timing and precision, utilizing trips and stuns in order to unleash massive damage on the monster's weak points. This style stays in sword mode a lot more, usually switching to axe only to get off a burst attack on the monster's weak spot and immediately switch back to sword. The video isn't quite as good, but it should give a rough idea as to the play style I'm talking about: įrom my experience, and maybe from what other people have gathered as well, using guard points isn't impossible, but the learning curve is extremely steep and it took me a really long time to get even close to the level where I was comfortable swinging my sword a bunch and blocking using guard point at the very last second. Here is an example of the first style of play: Similarly to the lance in that it one can either be a guard lancer or an evasion lancer, the charge blade can be used in a defensive style that utilizes guard points to stay on top of the monster pretty much the entire fight, or it can be used in a more hit-and-run/SA style that utilizes the raw power of the axe mode to deal lots of damage and then roll out of the attack range of the monster. So I have been playing charge blade for a while, and I have come to the conclusion that there are effectively two basic ways one can play the charge blade.
